The short answer: If a GLP-1 makes big meals feel like too much, a small breakfast built around a protein food (Greek yogurt, eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, fish or beans) is an easy start. The 10 ideas below range from about 11 to about 22 grams of protein for the portion shown, using USDA FoodData Central values and portion weights.

Why think about protein at breakfast on a GLP-1?

GLP-1 medicines slow gastric emptying, which means your stomach passes food on to the small intestine more slowly (Wegovy label, section 12.2). Many people stay full longer, and meals often get smaller.

Smaller meals leave less room, so what's on the plate counts. Protein is a chain of amino acids, the building blocks your body uses to repair cells and make new ones (MedlinePlus).

A 2025 joint nutrition advisory from four medical societies (ACLM, ASN, OMA and TOS) says to get enough protein during GLP-1 treatment. That's guidance to talk through with your clinician or a dietitian, not a rule from the medicine's label (advisory).

How did we count the protein?

We took protein per 100 g from USDA FoodData Central and multiplied it by the portion weights listed there. For example, 1 large egg is 50 g and 1 slice of whole-wheat bread is 32 g.

Small extras like berries, spinach, a tortilla or banana aren't counted, so totals run a little low, not high. Brands vary too, so check the nutrition label on your package. Tofu in particular is often lower than the firm tofu entry used here.

What if I'm not hungry in the morning?

Start smaller: half the portion, or something drinkable like the milk and yogurt smoothie. The advisory suggests small meals every few hours, with enough fluids if you feel queasy (advisory).

Which options work if I don't eat dairy or eggs?

The tofu scramble (about 22 g) is dairy-free and egg-free. The black bean taco works without the egg; the beans alone give about 7.6 g per 1/2 cup. Peanut butter toast is egg-free and dairy-free.

Is a big protein number always better?

No. No single breakfast has to hit a number, and needs differ from person to person. A dietitian or your prescriber can help you set a target that fits you.

How Checkin helps

Text Checkin a photo of your breakfast and it logs the meal with a protein estimate. It's a sample of your day, not a full count, and you can ask it plain-English questions about eating on your medicine.

How Checkin helps with meals

Checkin is a free AI companion for GLP-1s that you text. For this part of life on a GLP-1, it does three things:

  • Text a photo of your plate

It logs the meal with a protein estimate. A log is a sample of your day, not a full count.

  • Ask for ideas

Text “easy high-protein lunch?” and get a plain answer, with a picture when it helps.

  • It checks in two days after your shot

So you can say how your appetite and stomach are doing, and get ideas that fit.

Questions people ask

Are these numbers exact?

No. They're estimates for the portion described, from USDA FoodData Central values. Brands and portions vary.

Can I eat breakfast with my GLP-1 pill?

It depends on the pill. The Wegovy label says to wait at least 30 minutes after a Wegovy tablet before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. Follow your own medicine's instructions and ask your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What if breakfast makes me queasy?

Try a smaller portion or something drinkable. If nausea or vomiting won't go away, tell your doctor.
